The Other Side of Florida

14 Days/1000 Miles

Driving time: 20 hours (1.5 hrs per day average)
This itinerary can be booked to start/end in Miami or Orlando - simply re-arrange the campground bookings to fit.
This tour is available year-round.

Day 1

On arrival into Miami, make your way to the airport area hotel you have booked and enjoy a relaxing overnight stay.

Day 2

Call Our Principals first thing to arrange the time for motorhome collection. Unless you have pre-purchased the 'Early Bird' departure special, you will make your own way by taxi to the rental office this afternoon. Once you have your motorhome, get yourself on to the Florida Turnpike and head north - you are on your way to stay at West Palm Beach/Lion Country Safari KOA, just 79 miles away near West Palm Beach on Florida's east coast.

Day 3

Ever wake up to the shriek of a gibbon or the roar of a lion? This KOA sidles right up to the famous wildlife park where lions, elephants and more than 1,000 other animals roam free. There is a thrilling 4-mile drive through the park as well as amusements and rides to be enjoyed. When you have enjoyed your fill of animal excitement, jump aboard for your 67-mile drive to tonight's campground - the Clewiston/Lake Okeechobee KOA.

Days 4/5/6

After an early-morning swim, you will no doubt be itching to get away to the land of Mickey Mouse and his pals - Disneyworld. Check in to the South West Fort Summit KOA campground and then visit the theme park of choice - Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, SeaWorld - these and many more attractions are available. There is a daily shuttle to/from Disney. When you return to the 'campfire' you can recount the thrills of the day to new and old friends.

Day 7

A day in space! Leaving Orlando behind, head east for Kennedy Space Center, just 60 miles away, where the US Astronaut Hall of Fame celebrates space pioneers, lets you climb aboard a full-scale shuttle replica and sample g-force conditions. After these thrills, make your way the short distance (16 miles) to the Titusville KOA, in the nearby town of Mims.

Day 8

Driving a little further today - 95 miles in fact to St Augustine KOA campground on Anastasia Island. You are well positioned to explore, particularly as there is a daily shuttle to the downtown historic district. Alternatively you can take the 0.75 mile walk to the Atlantic Ocean or enjoy the on-site facilities such as the swimming pool, fishing pool and paddleboats.

Day 9

Take the scenic route west today through the Ocala National Forest and horse country, with its lush pastures and towering trees and the opportunity to tour one of over 500 thoroughbred horse farms to see how horseracing stars are raised. Ideally located south of Ocala is Wildwood KOA. Due west is Crystal River and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park; locally canoeing, hiking and airboat rides. Or just relax and enjoy the fabulous pool and hot tub.

Day 10

Off to the waterfront paradise of the St Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA. It is about a three-hour drive (138 miles) to this mangrove-lined bayou alive with dolphins, herons, egrets and flamingoes, 2 miles from the white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Go to the beach or enjoy fishing from the dock, three hot tubs, an outsize pool, 8 shuffleboard courts and cycling at this full-service resort.

Day 11

About 140 miles south brings you to the tropical KOA of Pine Island, west of Fort Myers. There are two clubhouses, a large heated pool, tennis courts - and a free shuttle to nearby beaches and attractions. Don't miss the local seafood!

Days 12/13

87 miles further south and two nights of total relaxation at the Naples/Marco Island KOA. White sandy Gulf beaches on one side and the vast wilderness of the Everglades on the other; plus the elegance of Naples right outside the gates. Take a dip in the tropical pool, rent a canoe and float into the Gulf of Mexico from KOA's own dock, or take a guided boat tour - a great way to see the local sights. Why not sign on for a memorable guided tour through the Everglades, or maybe to look for manatees and other wildlife with the Briggs Nature Center? On your last full day make the most of it with a memorable adventure and a great last night supper.

Day 14

This is the day you must return the home-on-wheels and we hope you have enjoyed your circular tour, seeing more of Florida than just Mickey Mouse! The drive is 104 miles back to Our Principals in Miami and it will take you just over two hours. You may need to be leaving between 8:30am and 9am to be back by 11am; but if you have the 'Early Bird' option, then you have a much more relaxing last day.
